The Western Chakras and Tantra

The Western Chakra Systems

I’m writing this for everyone who’s familiar with the western ideology around the chakra systems. There is a very distinct difference between the western ideology and the vedic. For the time being, we are going to talk about the western version. I will open up the floor as well with a post on the true vedic chakra systems.

The word chakra is Sanskrit for “wheel of light”. Within our bodies and auric field we have very subtle energy centers that are located along the central channel of our bodies. There are 9 main chakras running from the bottom of the feet, up through the spinal column to the top of the head, and one spiritual chakra located about 3 feet above the top of our head.

Each chakra is associated with different aspects of our being. They are where the mind-body connection manifests. Our chakra system is the conduit of all the 7 layers of our aura. Energy is brought forth from each of the chakra points. They are typically defined as invisible force fields around you that emanate either positive or negative energies, depending on your mood, emotions, and the status of your health.

Having knowledge of the chakras and how you can strengthen them is critical to your overall physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. If just one of your chakras is not aligned, you will notice that all soon become blocked. We need the energy within the chakra points to flow freely.

Traumatic life experiences can cause energy to become blocked in one or more of the chakra points. Tantra works with the chakras through a variety of techniques to unblock and balance these chakras.

Ancient Brahmin Hindus recorded the Vedas. They taught that there are 4 important places within the body where the soul resides: the head, throat, heart, and navel. These ancient texts also stated that your waking consciousness is found in the navel; dreamless sleep is found in the heart; dreaming is found in the throat; and the transcendent state is in the head.

The body parts are associated with the elements of fire, air, water, earth, and ether. The body coexists with psychic elements. It is an extension of the world’s energies.

Your chakras affect your mood as they’re connected to systems within the body. Depending on the flow of energy through them, they may be open, blocked, or sealed.

Open chakras radiate more energy and because of this, your body becomes more sensitive and receptive to balancing and healing.

Blocked chakras mean that energy is not properly flowing at one point within the system. A blocked chakra affects other chakra points and causes imbalances throughout.

The 4 Types of Tantra

White Tantra:  White tantra is primarily a solitary spiritual practice involving yoga asanas, breathwork, meditation, and visualization. Kundalini yoga involves practice for couples that involve activities such as eye gazing and synchronized breathing while engaging in yoga postures and breathing exercises.

Red Tantra: Through what is known as red tantra, couples can work mindfully with sexual energy, learning to remain present and honoring one another while experiencing the intensity of sexual arousal. Here, orgasm is withheld, or stalled for prolonged periods of time. This is done by drawing energy upwards from the lower chakras into the higher ones.

Pink Tantra: With pink tantra, the emphasis is on the heart chakra. It’s a balancing of the sexual and spiritual energies in order to cultivate love and compassion.

Black Tantra: This is also referred to as “Dark Tantra”. It involves the unconscious “shadow self” and the play of erotic fantasies. It often includes S&M and darker forms of fornication. Black tantra can be approached in a playful way but one must be mindful. Sharing fantasies with your partner can forge a deeper closeness between you, but it can also be a recipe for disaster. It often takes you off the spiritual path.
